If you’re self-conscious about your smile in Bolingbrook or Naperville due to crooked teeth or a bite issue like an overbite or underbite, braces from Dr. Kalpana Kandimalla may be right for you. Braces can be used to treat patients of all ages, not just pre-teens and teenagers. If you have major orthodontic issues, they are the most versatile option for correcting your smile. Schedule an orthodontic appointment today to learn more about how we can help at Innova Family Dental.

The Basics Of Braces

Braces have been used to correct the position of teeth for decades. They’re a time-tested, reliable way to correct your smile, and they can be used with additional orthodontic treatments and oral surgeries to correct your orthodontic problems, no matter how severe they are.

To begin treatment, Dr. Kandimalla will attach a series of brackets to your teeth, then run a wire through them. This wire is held in place with a number of elastic bands. By adjusting the bands and wire precisely, Dr. Kandimalla can gently improve the position of your teeth over time, correcting the alignment of your teeth and your bite.

How Braces Work

After Dr. Kandimalla has approved you for braces, you’ll come in for your initial appointment to have your braces applied. First, your teeth will be cleaned. Then, Dr. Kandimalla will use a special dental cement to bond a metal bracket to each of your upper and lower teeth.

Then, metal bands will be applied to your molars, and a metal “archwire” will be run through the brackets and bands. Once these are in place, elastic bands are applied to each bracket to hold the archwire in place. Then, your braces will be adjusted for the first time to begin your treatment. The entire procedure usually takes between 1-2 hours.

After your braces are attached, you’ll need to come into our office regularly for a quick oral exam so Dr. Kandimalla can adjust them and keep your treatment on track. Usually, you’ll come in every 4-6 weeks, but some patients may need to come into Innova Family Dental more frequently. This depends on your specific case.

First and foremost, braces will improve the appearance of your smile. If you have crooked teeth or a serious bite problem, you may feel embarrassed about your smile, which can lead to self-esteem issues. After treatment with braces, you’ll be able to smile with confidence because your teeth will be evenly spaced and beautiful.

Orthodontic treatment also benefits your oral health. Improperly spaced and crooked teeth are more difficult to clean, which means you may have a higher risk of cavities and gum disease if your teeth are not aligned properly.

In addition, orthodontic treatment can prevent tooth damage and premature wear. If your teeth don’t fit together properly or you have major bite issues, some of your teeth may begin to wear down prematurely. A properly-aligned bite will eliminate this problem.

Finally, orthodontic treatment with braces can prevent painful jaw issues later in life. A poorly-aligned bite or crooked teeth can contribute to disorders like temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TDM), and cause you a lot of pain and discomfort. With braces in Bolingbrook, you won’t have to worry about these issues.
