Symptoms of Sleep Disorders

Sleeping disorders can range from light snoring to different types of sleep apnea. Signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea can include:

• Diabetes
• Sleepiness throughout the day
• High blood pressure
• Teeth that are flattened or broken
• Migraines and headaches
• Tiredness when waking up
• Small lower jaw
• Large neck circumference
• Airway obstruction at the back of your throat
• Bruxism (chronic clenching and grinding)

Dr. Kandimalla will be able to detect bruxism symptoms during your dental exam. These warning signs could be indicative of a sleeping disorder. When people are deprived of oxygen at night, their TMJ tends to hyperflex and clench the jaws shut This will eventually result in worn enamel, flat teeth, and cracked dental work.

How We Can Help

Obstructive sleep apnea is closely linked to your oral anatomy. Our Bolingbrook dentist can use a special oral appliance to position your lower jaw slightly forwards. This technique prevents the soft tissues at the back of your mouth from sealing off your airway.

After we take an impression of your teeth, the snore or apnea appliance is made to either position your lower jaw in a certain manner or guide your tongue forward. When you lie back to sleep, your tongue is less likely to collapse against your tonsils, soft palate, and esophagus.
